How it works

The federal Cheaper Home Batteries discount

The discount is paid through small-scale technology certificates (STCs), the same system that discounts rooftop solar. Your accredited installer creates the certificates and takes their value straight off your price.

We size the battery

The discount is based on the battery's usable kWh, so we size it to your evening use, not the biggest box available.

Certificates are calculated

Usable kWh × the current STC factor, with tiers above 14 kWh, gives the number of certificates.

Discount on your invoice

The certificate value comes off your quote. You don't lodge a claim or wait for a refund.

Since 1 May 2026

Discount tiers by battery size

Only the first 50 kWh of usable capacity earns certificates, and the rate tapers above 14 kWh. Batteries up to 100 kWh remain eligible.

What it's worth

Example discounts

Dollar values assume certificates trade at $37–$40 each, the typical range in 2026.

Battery (usable)CertificatesDiscount if installed May–Dec 2026Discount if installed Jan–Jun 2027
10 kWh68$2,500–$2,700$2,100–$2,300
13.5 kWh92$3,400–$3,700$2,800–$3,100
20 kWh120$4,400–$4,800$3,700–$4,000
40 kWh165$6,100–$6,600$5,100–$5,500

The discount drops every six months. The STC factor was 8.4 in January–April 2026, is 6.8 for May–December 2026, and falls to 5.7 in January–June 2027 and 5.2 in July–December 2027. The program is also due to change again from 1 January 2027, so we confirm the current figures on every quote.

Eligibility

Who qualifies

  • A home or small business with rooftop solar, or solar installed at the same time
  • A battery on the Clean Energy Council approved product list
  • Installed by an accredited installer (SEBSS is CEC-accredited, Licence 73850)
  • Usable capacity up to 100 kWh (only the first 50 kWh earns certificates)
  • Adding a battery to an existing solar system qualifies
  • VPP-capable hardware is recommended; joining a VPP is your choice

Is there a Queensland state battery rebate? Not at the moment. The Queensland Battery Booster closed in May 2024 once its funding was allocated, and no new state program has been announced. We check for new state schemes before every quote.

Our advice

Get the rebate without overbuying

Size to evening use

Because the discount tapers after 14 kWh, most homes get the best value from a battery matched to their after-sunset usage.

Check your solar can fill it

An older 5 kW system may not charge a large battery in winter. We model both before recommending a size.

Install before the step-down

A 10 kWh battery loses about $400 of discount when the factor drops in January 2027.

FAQ

Battery rebate questions

Do I need to apply for the battery rebate?

No. Your installer creates the certificates and takes their value off your invoice, so the discount appears on your quote.

How much is the battery rebate in Queensland?

For batteries installed between May and December 2026, a 10 kWh battery gets about $2,500–$2,700 off and a 20 kWh battery about $4,400–$4,800, depending on certificate prices.

Can I get the rebate if I already have solar?

Yes. Adding a battery to an existing solar system qualifies, as long as the battery is on the approved list and installed by an accredited installer.

Will the rebate be smaller in 2027?

Yes. The certificate factor falls from 6.8 to 5.7 per kWh in January 2027 and to 5.2 in July 2027, and the program is due to change again from 1 January 2027.
